Wellness Tips for the Traveler

Happy FALL! One of my favorite seasons of the year. Cooler weather, blankets, scarves, and rain (we still need it so badly here in Cali)! As the season, time and schedules are changing we may start to notice the inner struggle with our immune system. Now is the time to practice even MORE self-care in preparation to fight of those winter time bugs (you know, like the flu). Here are my top four tips to staying well this Holiday season while traveling.

Tip #1 Add Some Spice!

Whether you are adding ginger to your tea or cinnamon to your diffuser. Adding spices in food can help support your digestion and also aid in immune support. Here is my go to hearty Turmeric Oatmeal breakfast. This recipe is from The Vegan Athlete's Youtube channel:

No time to watch the video, no worries, here is the adapted recipe (from my head) I use:

1cup of Almond Milk (or any non-dairy milk)

1 Splash of Turmeric (about 1tp)

1 splash of cinnamon (about 1tsp)

4-6 Dates cut into bit size pieces

1/2cup of steel cut oats

Let the milk, spices, and dates come to a simmer together. Add the steel cut oats. Cook for 5 minutes. Top with your choice pumpkin seeds, nuts, or coconut flakes. Enjoy!

Gluten/Grain free? You can use the same ingredients minus the oats to make a Golden Milk Tea.

Turmeric is getting a lot of publicity right now, especially in the cancer fight. Use this herb to help reduce inflammation, antioxidant, anticarcinogen, and many more benefits. Talk to your doctor before taking any new herb or herbal supplement.

Tip #2 Brush Your Shoulders Off

Dry brushing is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself right as you wake up. You could use a fancy brush tool from the pharmacy, or those washcloth gloves. But when you are traveling you might not have those fancy tools, except for what the Creator gave you, your hands! When you wake up doing some dry brushing is a great way to get the blood flowing and begin the release of toxins from the day  prior. Using a swiping motion from the furthest part of your body into the direction of your heart. I would recommend this at the beginning of your day and if you are a morning shower person, before your skin gets wet.

The dry brushing technique is also in the main stream fad, but is apart of the Ayurvedic (Sister Science to Yoga) lifestyle. Dry brushing promotes stimulation of the skin, lymph nodes, and removes dry skin. Some researchers have found it helps with decreasing cellulite, if you needed one more reason on why dry brushing is beneficial.

Tip #3 Take a Twist

BKS Iyengar, one of the first Indian teachers to come to the West with a more scientific approach to the yoga poses. He found that each pose affected the practitioners organs differently for their overall well-being. Twists increase blood flow in the liver, spleen, and pancreas (Light on Yoga). The increase of blood flow also gives a sense of alertness and vitality if feeling tired or sluggish.

Tip #4 Kick Your Feet Up

I have demonstrated this pose before in my Foot Series, and I'll do it again (because it's soooo good!) Legs up the wall/Vaparita Karani (in Sanskrit) is a great stress reliever and overall body detox pose. Even more effective, for those bunions, use a toe spacer. The legs do not have to be up the wall, especially while traveling you may not have wall space, legs up the bed works just fine as well. Here is the link to that blog if you missed it.

                                                                                                                                                           Ashley
